Julio Porro, MD

Julio Porro, MD, joined the board in April 2021 and is the current Board Chair. Born in Manzanillo, Cuba, Julio immigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1971 at age 6, where he struggled to learn English but often translated for them. He graduated from Brown University’s Program in Liberal Medical Education in 1990 with a BA in Biomedical Ethics and an MD. During his Family Medicine Residency in Santa Rosa, Julio co-founded a community health center and became its first Medical Director. In 1998, he moved to Santa Cruz, helped establish a Co-housing Community, and later served as Medical Director/CMO at Salud Para La Gente. Julio then became Associate Medical Director at Central California (Coast) Alliance for Health, overseeing Utilization Management, Quality Improvement, Pharmacy, and leading the Peer Review and Credentialing Committee. He has also served on the boards of Pajaro Valley Health Trust, Lifelab, and Dientes, where he was Board President for four years.
